Tainan City Government forms assisting groups of energy conservation, offering help to various institutes and schools

The secretary office of Tainan City Government, in an attempt to raise the effectiveness of electricity consumption of all institutes and schools and offer professional advice on energy saving, seeks the help from the Green Energy Technology Research Center of Kun Shan University. The Center helps the City Government to form energy conservation assisting groups, and give practical solutions and advices to various institutes and schools. The groups look into problems related to energy conservation, and provide suggestions in a written diagnosis. All these suggestions/solutions will be followed up in the future, and the institutes and schools under supervised express great benefit from the diagnosis.

The City Mayor Wei-Che Huang highly values the importance of energy conservation and carbon-reduction policy, and therefore creates a committee of this purpose, with vice mayor Yu-Dian Hsu as first commissioner and vice secretary Chung-Chuan Chiu as second commissioner. The committee reviews the electricity consumption of various institutes and schools on a regular basis. Most of these are from the Police Department, Bureau of Education, Fire Department and Environmental Protection Bureau. Specifically, the Baihe police station, Taizi junior high school, Zilong elementary school, Gueiren fire division, and Guan Tian cleaning division show high usage of electricity this year (2020) and last year (2019), and thus the assisting groups decide to offer advice to these five institutes and schools.

The assisting group visited Baihe police station and Taizi junior high school in Xinying district, to have a review and diagnosis. The two units first presented the current status of electricity consumption, then the assisting group gave some discussions and exchanges of opinions, after referencing to written reports provided. The group then took a tour and examine air-conditioning, water heater, drink-water machine, office lighting… etc, the main energy consuming equipments. The group suggested that Baihe police station can install fans and place segments in IT room to reduce the need of using air-conditioning.

For Taizi junior high school, the group suggested that lighting should be all replaced with LED, install water heater powered by solar energy, and a tighter management on air-conditioning in the dormitory. Professor Wei-Ming Wang from Kun Shan University said most staff and employees are aware of energy conservation in the units the group visited, and hopefully this awareness can be reinforced via the on-sight inspection. New technologies also allow us to increase the power of electronic equipment, and to cut unnecessary energy losses. The benefit can be remarkable when small but frequent energy savings are accumulated.

The Secretary Office of Tainan City Government said in addition to Baihe police station and Taizi junior high school, the group also has visited Gueiren fire division, Guan Tian cleaning unit and Zilong elementary school. The group offered professional diagnosis and thus significant effect has been observed. There is only limited resources on Earth, and the group’s efforts help to instill a proper mindset in electricity consumption – use only when necessary, and save as long as it is unnecessary. Hope this effort makes a contribution to environment protection.
